All social action, and activities, between individuals, lesser organizations, and the governing body must seek the common good of all society and of the individual person. The common good is that objective moral standard which takes into account the whole of man and woman in their material and spiritual nature. Thus by its very definition the common good upholds the dignity of the human person. The norms of social justice require that the common good be served on all social levels. What does this have to do with welfare? Well, the question ultimately comes back to whether or not welfare serves the common good of all society and by doing so, safeguards the dignity of the human person. What follows is an attempt to prove that welfare (at least my understanding of it) is not in keeping with the norms of social justice. Welfare in this country today does not require the recipient to labor for the goods he receives. Instead based on the amount of labor an individual does not put into the economy, the government provides housing and other basic necessities for that same individual. To labor is to make use of nature by responsible cultivation of it in order to meet our immediate needs. Labor therefore serves the common good by helping the person to grow and develop thereby upholding human dignity. Having ones basic needs met without labor then does not seem to be in keeping with norms of social justice, because it denies the personal dimension of labor which is the opportunity to grow and develop in their personhood and their role of sovereignty over creation. This personal dimension, which is denied in welfare, is an expression of the person being made in the image and likeness of God. Also within the welfare system, the government still retains ownership of the goods it supplies. It provides housing and other basic needs but provides no way for these impoverished to come into ownership of their own property. This too denies the dignity of the human person to whom it is given the fundamental right to the use of earthly goods. This right is the natural foundation of a livelihood, and to that right corresponds the right to private possession of property. Private ownership of property provides stability, security to the individual and again causes the individual to grow in his God-given role of sovereignty over creation. To allow a man or woman use of earthly goods without a real possibility of ownership denies them the dignity that is theirs through the right that is theirs of coming into possession of a small piece of the created world. This does not serve the common good because it gives the appearance of helping individuals come into a share of the economy, and of having their needs met while stripping them of the dignity that comes with doing it for themselves. The welfare sys tem then, cannot be in line with the norms of social justice because it does not seek the common good and can therefore not safeguard the human dignity of the person. It involved patients at the Stanford University Medical School who were diagnosed with scleroderma and were treated with a drug cocktail consisting of propranolol and alpha-methyldopa. The patients were informed about the side effects of the drug cocktail, which included dizziness, headaches, upset stomach and tearfulness. Some patients received a standard informed consent form and some received a standard informed consent form plus a special message which explained the placebo effect, in that the patients who received the special message were informed of the phenomenon of experiencing symptoms simply because the symptoms were mentioned. Bulgaria is one country with a lush intellectual capital featured through valuable capabilities of individuals and enterprises. Worth noting is that entrepreneurship is a tool for wealth creation that benefits both the individuals and the country. For instance, the US is known for its entrepreneur-friendly environment that encourages growth of small businesses for wealth creation. Bulgaria also needs to seek ways through which it can sustain its intellectual capital for further entrepreneurship stimulation and subsequent wealth creation. The purpose of this dissertation is to compare Bulgaria to Sweden (a country in the Nordic region) and the UK (a country in Western Europe) in terms of entrepreneurial success. In Sweden and the Nordic region at large, the entrepreneur takes all the risk when starting a business, a factor that brings fear to hardworking entrepreneurs who feel that trends in the international economy may affect their firms negatively. When compared to an established entrepreneur culture like that of the Silicon Valley in the US, the venture capital that Sweden grants to the entrepreneurs is very limited. Moreover, university students in Sweden find entrepreneurial careers to be less lucrative and therefore get involved more on the white collar jobs, no wonder the large scale firms establishment. According to D’Este and Fontana (2007), several higher education institutes in the UK have started to incorporate and support entrepreneurship careers in their curricular. This is because entrepreneurship has been associated with increased and improved innovations and technology advancement, which are promoted when industries and universities collaborate. However, Thurik (2003) relates the high unemployment rates experienced in the UK to lack of entrepreneurship and inadequate industrial infrastructure and attributes the reduced employment rates in the period of 1980s to 1990s to entrepreneurship. After about an endless minute a friendly night-crew member named Frank lets me in. As they pull the door back for me they ask, "So how are you this morning?" "Just fine thank you. If only I wasn’t so tired," I responded with a yawn. "I know how you feel." "Bye Frank." "See you later Amanda." I proceed onward in behind the mysterious "Employees Only" door to the time clock. As the clock turns to 7:25 I punch in. I pull my hair back and head my way towards the wonderful Food Avenue. On my way there I stop by the service desk and get my keys and the money for the till. 7:55 and my first guest arrives (he just happens to be an older gentleman that works on the pull team and doesn’t seem to realize that like the rest of the store, we don’t open until 8:00). In this lab we will make them be a prime example of osmosis, which is a transport mechanism. In this lab the problem being tested was what environment affects the mass of the potatoes the most. The independent variable is the environments used salt, water and iodine solution. The dependent variable is the mass of the potato after being exposed to the environment for 5 days.The control was a potato in no specific environment, meaning it is just sitting in air, no salt and no water/iodine solution. If the potato is exposed to a specific (hypotonic/hypertonic) environment then the mass will increase/decrease because the cell will grow or shrink due to the environment exposed to. Experimental Design: The groups being testes are the hypotonic environment (water and iodine), hypertonic environment (Salt) and the con trol which is just the potato in just the beaker. The time the potatoes stay in each environment is 5 days.One potato is in 300mL of water and iodine solution, another is in 300mL of salt and the last potato is just in air. The potatoes are all fully peeled with no skin. The potatoes are in 3 different beakers with saran wrap over the top of each beaker. Materials: 3 potatoes Potato peeler 3; 500mL beakers 300mL of salt 300mL water 50 drops of iodine Saran wrap Safety goggles Triple beam balance Procedure: 1. Gather materials above 2. Put on goggles 3. Be safe 4. Peel three potatoes over garbage 5. Take mass of each potato 6. Record 7.Put three potatoes in three different beakers 8. Leave one potato in just the beaker (control) 9. In another beaker put 300 mL of water in with 50 drops of iodine (hypotonic environment) 10. In last beaker put 30mL of salt ensuring potato is covered. (hypertonic environment) 11. The control changed only a single gram in mass, the hypertonic environment grew by 15. 3 grams.On the chart above it is below the graph because the starting mass was taken, then the mass after being in the environment was taken, and the result was -15. 3g hence the reason it appears to be negative. The hypotonic got lost 41. 9g of mass. Conclusion: The results that were taken were clear. The hypothesis was correct, based on the environment the potato was in it either grew or shrunk because it was exposed to the (hypotonic/hypertonic) environment. The results are valid because there were no variables in the experiment and also the results were ones that were expected.In the hypertonic environment the potato grew (as it was expected to) and in the hypotonic environment it shrunk (as it was expected to). The potatoes were expected to do so because when a cell is in a hypertonic environment water tends to flow into the cell, while in a hypotonic environment the water flows out of the cell. This was proven in this experiment. There were no changes to the procedure made. There will be no changes to the procedure if the experiment is replicated again.
